The Australian skipper has claimed 309 Test scalps in 71 five-day games with an stellar bowling average.

The Australian selection chief Bailey has declared that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in the upcoming England-Australia contest.

There were concerns that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a stress fracture in his back that had not yet healed.

Earlier indications from team management suggested no definitive call had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the five-Test series kicking off on the 21st of November in Perth.

He revealed that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about the likelihood of being involved.

"We're aware that the clock is ticking and there are permutations around that, not just his injury, but additional elements," the selector added.

"The outlook is good. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a key capacity. With luck starting in Perth. Otherwise, we'll adjust."

Injury History

Cummins was ruled out the white-ball matches against New Zealand and India last month after medical tests showed a stress reaction in his back.

Previous incidents include of recurring issues, with recurrences in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 causing him to miss several home seasons in a limited period.

He emphasized he would be bold in recovery efforts in his recovery plan to make the squad for the Ashes.

The selector indicated that there was no confirmation if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "getting tight" for him to recover fully for the opener.

Contingency Plans

Should Cummins not be fit, ex-skipper Smith will lead the side.

All-rounder Cameron Green was excluded lately from the national team for their one-day international series against India as a preventive step because of discomfort in his torso.

He labeled it as a "small issue and stated that he's scheduled to appear in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "in a good place to be ready to bowl."

"Extensive planning has gone into developing the strategy for him to participate for the opening match as an batting and bowling option," Bailey explained.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the first two ODIs regardless. His aggressive style the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, even if it just sets him back for 24 more hours, the choice was made to take a cautious route."
